COMPETENCIES #1-3
Competency #1
Demonstrated Ethical & Professional Behavior

For competency 1, it explains the need for social workers to demonstrate ethical and professional behaviors in their roles. This artifact demonstrates the competency because for the work evaluations, it allows for reflection and self-regulation as far work requirements. Work evaluations or appraisals are given the chance for the individual to reflect over professionalism in the workplace and skills/ competencies. For work evaluations the individual gives a self assessment on how they would rate themselves in administration, professionalism and emergency response. The work evaluations were then used to meet with our supervisors and discussed further on how we can improve and incorporate where we need to improve on skills. For me I needed to work on the administrative side of work where we are able to submit paperwork on progress of the work being done. This is something that has allowed me to further reflect on where I need to improve my work ethic.
Throughout work experiences mistakes will be made but the goal is to self reflect and grow from them and further improve your expertise. The artifact I chose was my work evaluation that allows for my supervisors to meet with me and provide feedback over my work and skills. Work evaluations allow a person to take a step back and reflect over the progress of their work and skills. In a professional setting am I given that chance to personally self reflect about what my accomplishments are and where I can further improve my professional skills. Being in this position for 3 years has helped me further develop the way I approach situations whether it be with staff members or residents, I must always approach situations in a professional manner and separate my feelings from the situation. As a social worker it is important to evaluate yourself as a professional in the setting and know how you react to situations. My evaluations in professional life consist of how I have worked to represent my position, confront my peers and students, and maintain relationships with my staff despite our differences.
Competency #2
Engage Diversity and Difference in Practice

I chose to look at my paper from SOCW 300 that consisted of interviewing a person from a different identity than our own. For this paper I took time to reflect on which social identity This artifact related to Competency 2 because it allowed us to focus on personal biases that we may hold about backgrounds/ experiences that we may have never been familiar with. In this paper I decided to interview someone that identified as gay to learn more about sexual orientation and work towards recognizing and understand some biases that I may hold. This was a first step for me to remove my personal biases and further engage with an individual of a different background than my own.
Recognizing what biases you hold is the first step to being able to learn and understand where those biases come from. In the paper it allowed me to further recognize that I have never been really exposed to the topic of sexual orientation and that my biases and feelings of not being at comfort may come up with working with a client, if I don’t take the time to learn about diverse identities and different values/perspectives. This paper relates to Competency 2 because it allows you to become self aware about your own personal biases and the world around you. The interview and paper itself allowed us to take a step back and become the learner and listener which as a social worker, we must learn to take on that role and understand that our clients are their own experts of their story and what they are going through. Overall the artifact demonstrates the idea of the social work working on personal biases to different identities/ experiences. While also stepping back and detaching your feelings to the situation and empowering your clients to take the lead and share how they feel and what they would like to accomplish.
Competency #3
Advance Human Rights and Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice

An artifact that I chose for Competency 3 is participating in a DACA protest along with giving a presentation over DACA and rights. In my freshman year of college I participated in this DACA protest which was organized by some Latinx organizations such as La Casa and ICAUSE. As a social worker we will be working with populations of diverse issues and as a resource to the community and individuals we must work towards breaking down systems of oppression that go against human rights. In this artifact I take part in a DACA protest to show the advocacy work of taking action and actively participating in the movement for change. I also provided a space to present over DACA and rights, to work in further understanding policies and systems and work toward educating others over this human rights issue.
Every person deserves the right to education and as a community leader must ensure that we are challenging government representatives to create change to improve people’s economic and cultural rights. Participating in a protest, educating and advocating for issues that may not directly affect or impact you, allows you take in a new perspective of the issue and acknowledging that not all problems will directly impact you but using your voice or taking action can help raise awareness and show that this issue is something that can be improved. I have acknowledged that I am privileged to receive financial assistance and work in this country but also using that space of privilege to take part in the action and actively participate and learn more about the issue.
